Ok. I know Yankees don’t have a bad record so far. However, there are two things very obvious right now.
First of all, Yankees certainly don’t have the same luck this year as they received last year in the injury department.
And then Cashman’s offseason moves don’t work out too well, do it? Most of predictions I made on the post of What Cashman has done this off-season become reality.
I know Hideki Matsui doesn’t perform so well in LA land. However, at least, he is playing. Who knows how he will perform in the Yankees lineup. But, Nick Johnson is hurt again and sits on the 60 days disable list.
The plan of replacing Johnny Damon with Curtis Graderson doesn’t work, either. Not to mention that Austin Jackson plays quite well in Detroit. On top of that, Javier Vazquez seems can’t handle the pressure of playing in New York while many old players show their ages, including Posada, Andy and Mo. These problems only prove my concerns about the catcher and bullpen are legitimate.
We only can hope Yankees can weather this storm.

Goodbye, Damon
I know I haven’t updated my blog for a long time. However, as you guys know, January and February are slow months in terms of baseball news.
Ok, Yankees sign Randy Winn for 2 million and close the door for Johnny Damon’s return officially. I don’t know whose fault for this because I don’t involve in negotiation.
Based on my negotiation experience, it is really hard to figure out why because there are too many parties with too many moving parts during the negotiation. Not to mention, we all try to test opponent’s bottom line.
I am fine with Yankees upgrading their defense by bring in Randy Winn. However, the result is lose-lose situation for both parties. I stick to my point: Yankees will regret not to bring back one of Damon or Matsui back this season.
I hope I am wrong about that. Let’s Go Yankees!

What Cashman has done this off-season
Let me get straight to the point. I don’t like the moves Cashman has made this off-season even though I have been in Cashman’s supporters’ camp. It seems everyone likes his moves. Not for me. Those moves make Yankees better on paper. However, I have a hunch that those moves may come back to bite us. As a diehard Yankees fan, I hope I am wrong about my prediction.
I also start wondering whether Cashman has the ability to make good signings or trades in order to improve his team when he can’t throw money at the problems.
I believe Cashman makes those decisions based on the numbers. I am pretty sure you guys get tons of analyses like that. You are not going to get one from me. My opinion is more based on my observation.
I believe chemistry can affect the team performance. I believe some players can perform better under the pressure or at the clutch time than others. I also believe the team overall performance can be better when some players play with certain players.
From this point on, barring some surprises, two things are more likely happening in Yankeesland. First of all, Cashman may add a second-tier left outfielder. Secondly, he may add one bat off the bench. So, it will be a great time to review what Cashman has done this off-season?
Well, he basically replaces Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, Melky Cabrera and numbers of no.4 starter(Joba chamberlain, Chad Gaudin, Sergio Mitre, etc) with Curtis Granderson, Nick Johnson, Jamie Hoffmann and Javier Vazquez while he almost empties the depth of minor league system except catching department.(P.S. You can’t count Joba and Hughes because they are already major leaguers.)
Of course, I don’t count players don’t contribute that much this season, such as Bruney, Nady, Wang,etc. I also don’t include the possible impact of losing Molina, Phil Coke, etc.
Because I already commented on what I think regard of Curtis Granderson trade, I am not going to repeat one more time. But, in short, you can say it is a push when it comes down to Johnny Damon vs Curtis Granderson because Johnny Damon is a contact hitter with more speed who can put together more good at-bats and Curtis Granderson is younger with more power.
As for Nick Johnson deal, let me make one point clear. I understand Yankees don’t bring Matsui back due to age and injury concerns. The days he plays on the field are gone, it makes Yankees very difficult to rotate DH spot for Jeter, A-Rod, Teixeira and Posada. But, why bring into a younger version of Matsui? I know there is slight difference when Nick has high base percentage and Matsui has more power. But, he also can’t stay healthy and will be our full time DH with occasional first baseman.
These analyses above are rational. Irrationally, I rather have Damon and Matsui than Nick and Granderson because I trust them more to delivery at the clutch time. If I were Cashman, I would trade for Granderson and sign Damon back.
Of course, I don’t have problems with Nick instead of Matsui if Yankees spend over their budget they claim they have again and end up with getting Damon back in the end.
If Cashman ends up with a second-tier left fielder(not Damon) along with Nick and Gradnerson after trading Melky, I am afraid of this experiment may not end too well.
There are just too many players in the lineup we are not sure what we can get. Don’t forget A-Rod has a hip surgery that requires second surgery originally. Don’t forget Swisher actually perform better than most people expect. Let alone Posada stays healthy while Jeter plays well. On top of that, we actually have Melky and Gardner platoon for center fielder. I am not sure what we can get from Gardner when he plays everyday.
As for Javier Vazquez trade, it is a good deal if the only thing we ask him to do is pitching behind CC, AJ and Pettitte. If one of top 3 gets hurt that is high possibility after the workload they endure for 2009 season and we ask the other guys pitch at the spot they are not supposed to be along with a uncertain no.5 starter, I can see the disaster waiting to happen.
I just don’t feel too comfortable with the combination of three-year workload of CC, injury history of AJ, age of Pettitte and uncertainty of Joba and Hughes. That is why I don’t like the trade for Javier Vazquez.
I know Javier Vazquez has a nice track record of durability. But, it doesn’t guarantee it will happen again in 2010. Let alone what happened in 2004. If I were Brian Cashman, I will push for a front line starter who proves he can handle American league, such as Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, John Lackey,etc. Even if we can’t get one of them, I will use the same amount of money given to Javier Vazquez to sign both Chien-Ming Wang and Ben Sheets that will bring us two potential two frontline starters.
The other two things what Cashman has done this off-season I don’t like are bullpen and catchers. He basically hand the job to Cervelli. Don’t get me wrong. Cervelli has done a great job. But, can he handle the job as a full time backup to Posada? Let alone the possibility to be a starting catcher if Posada gets hurt again. I think Yankees underestimate the value of Molina.
Of course, I know Yankees have depth in catching department down the farm system. But, are they ready?
The other thing is no move at all made by Cashman for the bullpen. I know relief pitchers except closers perform differently every year. I know Girardi shows the ability to manage the bullpen well. However, I am not too sure Girardi has enough options after Cashman almost empties high level of Yankees minor league system this offseason.
Don’t forget Mo is 40 year old, especially when you consider the workload he endures during playoff run. On top of that, it seems to me Mo loses his stuff a little bit after the injury he suffered at previous year. Not to mention, he told to reporters after playoff he pitched with some sort of injuries.
Even if Mo is Mo and someone from somewhere can do the good job in the bullpen, Yankees certainly need a more certain setup man. I believe that guy will be Joba who Yankees finally stretch him out enough as a starter. Keep in mind two things. There are more frontline starters available while Pettitte is more likely retired next year.
That is why I would sign or trade someone to be Mo’s setup man if I were Cashman this off-season. Just in case, Mo may get hurt or pitch not so well. If the guy perform well, he may be the potential heir to Mo next season or use as leverage to get Mo back at reasonable price. By getting a new setup man, we can put both Joba and Hughes into the rotation where they are supposed to be. Because there are some uncertainty surrounding with Joba and Hughes as starters, The signings of Ben Sheets and Chien-Ming Wang as safety net will work out perfectly.
Among CC, AJ, Pettitte, Joba, Hughes and Sheets, someone will get injured or pitch not so well. Of course, the other 5 guys can form a great rotation. Because the depth we have in the rotation, we can ease Wang back to his old form right around All-Star break for potential injury. Even if Sheets and Wang don’t work out well for Yankees, they are one-year deal and we can see what we can get from Joba and Hughes.
That being saying, I bet one of Sheets and Wang will perform well in 2010. By the way, we can save some depth in the minor league system by not making a trade for Javier Vazquez.

Curtis Granderson and Brian Bruney trades
It seems Yankees never stay still during any point of season, including off-season and playoffs. This certainly gives Yankees fans many things to talk about and have chances to love Yankees more which is a good thing.
There is no exception this off-season as well.
As for Brian Bruney trade, I really can't say I will miss him because it seems to me he always walks tons of guys that is a big no-no for me to a pitcher. I rather pitchers to give up hits than walking guys.
As for Curtis Granderson trade, my first reaction is Yankees giving up a little bit too much for him. Personally, I won't give up Austin Jackson for him. That being saying, I will rather Yankees have him than giving another big long term contract to relative older players, such as Jason Bay and Matt Holliday. Of course, I know they are much better overall players than Curtis Granderson. But, at some point, you have to ask how many long term contracts Yankees want to tie to for at least next 5 years.
I don't know prospects good enough to say which team gets the best deal out of this three-way trade. However, no one knows for sure how all the prospects will turn out to be.
If what Brian Cashman says is true which Yankees’ priority this off-season is pitching and a left fielder with no-so-firm fewer pay roll on hand, I think this deal means few things. First of all, I think this deal pretty much closes door on Jason Bay and Matt Holliday. Brian Cashman always likes to have flexibility. I don’t think he will go out to give another long term deal.
As for Johnny Damon, Yankees probably gain some leverages during negotiation. If Damon asks more than 2 year deal which I won’t give to him, I can see Yankees go to lesser players in order to add some depth. As we see this season, Melky and Gardner can handle the platoon situation. That being saying, Damon is a good fit to no.2 spot as DH and plays some games at the left field in order to give DH spot for Posada, Jeter, A-Rod and Teixeira once a while.
Brian Cashman probably focuses on starting pitchers and bench players from this point on. However, I think this deal may have an impact on Roy Halladay deal for couple of reasons. Of course, I assume Yankees will get Pettitte’s deal done at some point of this off-season.

As history shows, there is a big risk to give any pitcher a long term contract. One will think two long term contracts to pitchers will be enough. I know Roy Halladay is an ACE, but he will be 33 year old in 2010. Do you really want to sign him through 37,38?
Secondly, I don’t think Cashman want to give up all good prospects he has at the same off-season after dealing Austin Jackson, Ian Kennedy and Phil Coke. You don’t give up prospects and let him walk at the end of 2010 season. Draft picks mean much less for Yankees than other small market teams. As Girardi shows he can handle the bullpen well, Yankees will need all the pitching depth they have on the higher minor league system to fill up their bullpen and(or) rotation. You can’t deal all of them away.
If I have to guess now, I think Yankees will bet and sign one or two veteran starting pitchers for a short term deal this off-season in order to fill up the end of rotation. Let us wait and see.

Opening day of New Yankees Stadium
12:40pm They are introducing many old Yankees great players now.
12:58pm They just finish introducing 2009 Yankees. It seems to me Jeter, Andy, Mo and Joba get the loudest cheers among current Yankees.
1:35pm I miss first inning because of some technology difficulty. I am not sure where the problem comes from. It comes from either my computer is suck or new mlb.tv is suck.
1:38pm Johnny Damon collects first hit of New Yankees stadium. I am sure there are many firsts many Yankees fans key eyes on.
1:49pm I face more technology difficulty and start to feel very annoying for me. I think the problem comes from new mlb.tv.
1:51pm Ransom just strikeout on a high fastball. He really can't look worse at the plate. At this rate, I don't think he will be able to keep his utility infielder job once A-Rod comes back. I don't want Pena to take that job and sit on the bench because I rather see him playing in AAA to get his work in.
2:02pm The way Yankees offence goes, we better hope CC has a great day. In fact, almost every yankees pitcher has to have that thought in their mind.
2:12pm Jeter makes a nice play to get double play the previous inning. He always know where he is and makes right plays. I am not sure how much mini wrist injury Teixeira play a role on his April slump. Fortunately for him, Yankees has been winning, so not many people give him hard time.
2:15pm I am a little bit surprised at seeing Damon only gets to third base. It's too bad Posada didn't drive them in.
2:26pm For some reasons, my feed is a little bit slower than others, so I don't read Peter's blog and mlb website during the game.
2:29pm CC just wastes a great play by Ransom who makes a great play to save a run by giving up RBI double. 1-0 Indians. However, If Ransom didn't make that play, Indians would score 2 runs in that inning.
2:32pm Because of that great play by Ransom, I promise not to get on Ransom as much as I did
2:33pm For some reasons, Cliff Lee looks like a Cy Young Award winner against Yankees.
2:35pm I guess it all depends on pitchers because new Yankees stadium doesn't look like a hitting friendly ballpark today which looks like one during exhibition. By the way, I will be mad if Yankees loses this game by 1-0, but I will not be mad at CC because Yankees should be able to score at least one run.
2:40pm Let us see whether magic Derek Jeter drive them in or not. It will be very fitting at this opening day of New Yankees stadium.
2:42pm It seems to me Yankees gets runners on with two outs every inning. It feels like this game has been played more than 4 innings.
2:53pm A great throw by Posada to get Sizemore which becomes a huge play because following two players single. If CC gets out this inning without giving up any run, I get a feeling Yankees will come back to win this game. If Ransom and Posada didn't make those two great plays, Indians would be up 3-0.
2:59pm I find out Yes feed is slower than others for some reasons.
3:05pm It's amazing two catchers hit the memorable homeruns at two Yankees stadium. Molina hits the last homerun of old Yankees stadium while Posada hits the first homerun of New Yankees stadium.
3:11pm Cano looks so differently good at the plate this season. He works another walk. As I promise, I won't talk about specific player. However, it's good to see Yankees drive Cliff Lee's pitch counts up to 103 through 5 innings. At most, he will only be able to throw another inning.
3:18pm I will image this will be CC's last inning. I think CC wants to pitch at least 6 innings as a competitior. I hope Edwar doesn't screw up this inning. Edwar makes me nervous as a relief pitcher.
3:32pm Sorry for lack of posts this past 10 mintues because I am so nervous. If Yankees can get out of this inning without giving up any run, we will win this game. I actually think Cano makes a great play to save a run when the ball is up to middle. It's amazing he is able to get to that ball.
3:37pm Yankees has played great baseball games lately. Today is another one. Today is kind of game when two great pitchers try to work out a jam after another and some great defense plays.
3:45pm Veras is another relief pitcher who makes me nervous for different reasons. Edwar gives up too many homeruns while Veras doesn't know where the ball goes. If Yankees can get out the 7th inning without giving up any run which will be a miracle, Yankees will have a great chance to win this game because the way Bruney and Mo throw.
3:55pm This game turns into a ugly show by Yankees bullpen. If I have to predict now, Veras won't be in the Yankees bullpen too long. Again, Veras gets into trouble by walking the leadoff batter of the inning. I know a lot of people will talk about the bridge to Mo. However, CC has to shoulder some of blame because he only pitches 5.2 inning.
4:00pm What a terrible job by Yankees bullpen. Marte gives up a run by walking a man when bases are loaded and gives up one gram slam and one solo shot.
4:04pm Right now, If Yankees want to win ball game, the 7th inning will be the key of ball game because Bruney settle in his 8th set up man role while Mo is our closer. No other relief pitcher in the Yankees bullpen pitches well other than Bruney and Mo in my opinion.
4:25pm It's good to see a relief pitcher throwing quality strike. I will predict Robertson will replace Veras' spot if he has few more this kind of inning.
4:29pm I know many Yankees fans are killing Girardi now because Veras and Marte's performance in the 7th inning. However, it's still young season. He can't wear out Bruney and Mo. If Yankees can get out the 7th inning without giving up any run which will be a miracle, Yankees will have a great chance to win this game because the way Bruney and Mo throw.
3:55pm This game turns into a ugly show by Yankees bullpen. If I have to predict now, Veras won't be in the Yankees bullpen too long. Again, Veras gets into trouble by walking the leadoff batter of the inning. I know a lot of people will talk about the bridge to Mo. However, CC has to shoulder some of blame because he only pitches 5.2 inning.
4:00pm What a terrible job by Yankees bullpen. Marte gives up a run by walking a man when bases are loaded and gives up one gram slam and one solo shot.
4:04pm Right now, If Yankees want to win ball game, the 7th inning will be the key of ball game because Bruney settle in his 8th set up man role while Mo is our closer. No other relief pitcher in the Yankees bullpen pitches well other than Bruney and Mo in my opinion.

Joba's 5th Spring Training Outing
1:21pm It sounds like Joba has a good first inning of work. Suzyn and John say Yankees hope Joba can get batters out at fewer pitches. I actually don't concern about that. As a no.5 pitcher, if big 4 are doing they are supposed to do, we should have well-rested bullpen to back up Joba. That is the lesson Joba will learn from pitching more. I don't think that is something young pitchers can suddenly listen to.
1:33pm Damon not only makes a great catch on left field but also move Melky over to third base with less than 2 outs. Let see whether or not Teixeira can get that run in with less than 2 outs. Ok. Texieira walks. I think Matsui can get that run in

That's why I barely question Manager's decision.
This game started at 3am in Sydney and ended up in 8am. As you guys can image, I am so tired that I need to write this post short and quick in order to catch some sleep for my work. I am not the one question Manager's in game decision too much because you never know what will happen and what the real reason behind the scene.
Today game, In 9th inning, After Damon didn't attempt to put a bunt down to move runner up to second and third, Jeter hit a double play to end the inning. I believe this is my first time to have this question in my mind this season,"Why not let Damon bunt to move runners?". I didn't jump on to conclusion and want to wait post-game interview from Joe Girardi. I got my answer.
Girardi said on post-game interview, "I did it yesterday with Damon in the 9th inning, but Damon didn't look comfortable about bunting and he didn't execute the bunt successfully. That's why I never think about letting Damon bunt again today."
You probably can argue Joe Girardi shouldn't throw his players under the bus that Cashman probably did the same thing when he was interviewed by reporters regard of Melky's demotion.
Cashman said," I believe Melky is a better player than he has been showed", but "You probably can change Melky name to a lot of players on the field that make a lot of more money than Melky, too"
You may say Joe Girardi should cover for his players. This is probably what Joe Torre has done for his players. That's why they all love to play for him. This is probably why Joe Torre get so many criticism from fans about his poor in-game decision.
But, we all learn one thing in our life for sure. At some points, Parents have to let their children go, learn from their mistakes and face challenges in order to grow up. If parents always protect their children who may never know how to do some certain things.
This may be the reason why our bombers can't go deep in the playoffs recent years. This also may be the reason why our bombers struggle so much this season. Joe Girardi and verterans on this team need to get to know each other and make adjustment. I believe they will. Eventually, Joe Girardi will get his message cross which is playing fundamental baseball and execute coaches' tactics.

Just don't get beat by yourself....
Recently, I not only have to keep working on my stuff but also keep my eyes on Yankees and Olympic games. I certainly watch my Taiwan baseball team play in Olympic games.
Do you know the difference of the way they play between Yankees and Taiwan? My Taiwan baseball team don't get beat by ourselves. I believe most Yankees fan have same feeling as me. When we watch Yankees playing, we feel stressful, uneasy and frustrated every time out even when the games Yankees win. Why? Our bombers beat themselves too often.
If my Taiwan baseball team get beat, we won't get beat by ourselves. My Taiwan baseball team is not a super strong team. We are not even a favor in this competition. We are going to lose some games I am pretty sure about that, but the reason will be the other team play better than us, not because we get beat by ourselves.
No matter my Taiwan baseball team win or lose, I always feel stress free and end up with feeling Let's go get them next time or they just play better than us. I won't feel frustrated and stressful after game. I won't have "what if" in my mind.
Take game 1 against Netherlands as example, Our pitchers won't give up too many free passes. We play great defense. Our position players not only play a flawless defense but also make few beautiful plays.
We don't have a lot of players can't hit for power, but we are very selective at the plate, move runners over and get them in very well. In fact, 2 of 5 runs came with sacrifice fly. When there is a runner on base, we will do whatever we can to move runner even when we can't get a hit.
On top of that, when the other team give us a chance to beat them. We won't miss it. For example, the only big inning we have is in the fourth inning when we score 3 of 5 runs. Netherlands pitcher give up 2 walks in that inning. We score 3 runs on two singles and one sacrifice fly.
This is something I think I miss most when I watch Yankees playing. Damon threw to second instead of third on a sacrifice fly. Cano and Betemit miscommunicate on stolen base. Cano made that costly error before Young's three-run homerun. Melky and Cano miscommunicate on a short fly ball. Sexson fails at least to move runners when there is first and second no one out. These plays all let our Yankees fans wonder "what if" after game. This is fundamental baseball. These plays help you to win ball game.

Do you question every move Yankees' Manager make? I don't
Before going into this topic, I have to say this first. I am like every Yankees fans. I am not happy and feel frustrated when Yankees lose games. This is nothing to do what I am going to say.
Are you one of fans question Girardi sit Damon and Giambi and play Christian and Sexson? Are you one of fans always question and second guess every move Managers make? I don't because you never what would happen on the field if Managers did what you thought and you never really know what really happen behind the scene. Well, I think I try not to. Of course, I sometimes feel extremely upset and may lose my mind.
If you come to this blog to read these kind of analysis, I think you may feel disappointed from this aspect. You may say, "Well, You are a blogger of a Yankees' blog. If you don't write this and that, why bother to be a blogger?" I believe there are tons of blogs like that. For my blog, I just want to write positive things as many as I can and try to make my blog's readers enjoy watching baseball game as much as they can.
True story. I was one of producer sof one of play which include around 100 staff. One of main jobs I need to do is to be a good bridge between the whole staff and make sure everything get done on time. Unfortunately for me, there are two directors in that play as well. During the whole production, I not only have to do all the stuff but also deal with two directors that I certainly spent tons of energy on.
I always remember one thing continuously happened during the production of that play. Because I need to make sure both directors happy and keep things going to right direction on time, I always have to make up reasons when two directors have conflicts between them and force the production slow down. "You never really know what really happen behind the scene unless you are there"
Maybe Damon said "He is fine because he wants to show his toughness". Maybe Yankees want to find out what Christian can do. If Yankees don't plan on playing Damon every game the rest of season, why not let him rest on the turf against a lefty? If Yankees bring Sexson to hit lefty and don't play him against a lefty, when Yankees are going to use him? There must be some reasons for that. Giardi plays this game for a long time. I always trust, believe and respect specialty.

I told you so...
Follow me to repeat this word "DEFENSE". You can't win a champion without "decent" defense. You can see the reaction from Jeter toward Cano who is supposed to be on second base to receive the force, but Jeter should take some blame for high throw to first base as well. Damon also lost a flyball.
Most people always say, Pitchers should pick up his teammates after errors. In my opinion, Pitchers are human beings as well, how come you can expect them to keep their emotion in check every time when position players make errors, especially when you consider if those errors lead to runs.
But, Of course, Moose and Jeter doesn't point their fingers to anyone else but themselves. I believe they will turn this around from their reactions after the game.
When we feel good about the return of A-Rod, Jeter gets hit on his hand whose status is listed day to day.
Can this be our turning point of season? I hope so. Oh, By the way, A-Rod hit a two run homer and it seems Edwar Ramirez is a real deal.

Who said Jeter's defense was bad?
Did you guys see that ground ball Jeter get around 3th inning? I think A-Rod may be right. We may see Jeter have a MVP season.
Do we need to concern about Damon's defense on the left field? If he miss more flyballs like that, we may need to reconsider that as well. Right now, I think it's still too early to tell.
Finally, the great moment of game came when Pettitte threw that inside high fastball to David Ortiz. Yes, it sound right and feel great, doesn't it? I am also glad to see Pettitte come out this game and feel healthy. I am still kind of worrying about the health of Pettitte. Hopefully, I just think too much.
