Let me get straight to the point. I don’t like the moves Cashman has made this off-season even though I have been in Cashman’s supporters’ camp. It seems everyone likes his moves. Not for me. Those moves make Yankees better on paper. However, I have a hunch that those moves may come back to bite us. As a diehard Yankees fan, I hope I am wrong about my prediction.
I also start wondering whether Cashman has the ability to make good signings or trades in order to improve his team when he can’t throw money at the problems.
I believe Cashman makes those decisions based on the numbers. I am pretty sure you guys get tons of analyses like that. You are not going to get one from me. My opinion is more based on my observation.
I believe chemistry can affect the team performance. I believe some players can perform better under the pressure or at the clutch time than others. I also believe the team overall performance can be better when some players play with certain players.
From this point on, barring some surprises, two things are more likely happening in Yankeesland. First of all, Cashman may add a second-tier left outfielder. Secondly, he may add one bat off the bench. So, it will be a great time to review what Cashman has done this off-season?
Well, he basically replaces Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, Melky Cabrera and numbers of no.4 starter(Joba chamberlain, Chad Gaudin, Sergio Mitre, etc) with Curtis Granderson, Nick Johnson, Jamie Hoffmann and Javier Vazquez while he almost empties the depth of minor league system except catching department.(P.S. You can’t count Joba and Hughes because they are already major leaguers.)
Of course, I don’t count players don’t contribute that much this season, such as Bruney, Nady, Wang, etc. I also don’t include the possible impact of losing Molina, Phil Coke, etc.
Because I already commented on what I think regard of Curtis Granderson trade, I am not going to repeat one more time. But, in short, you can say it is a push when it comes down to Johnny Damon vs Curtis Granderson because Johnny Damon is a contact hitter with more speed who can put together more good at-bats and Curtis Granderson is younger with more power.
As for Nick Johnson deal, let me make one point clear. I understand Yankees don’t bring Matsui back due to age and injury concerns. The days he plays on the field are gone, it makes Yankees very difficult to rotate DH spot for Jeter, A-Rod, Teixeira and Posada. But, why bring into a younger version of Matsui? I know there is slight difference when Nick has high base percentage and Matsui has more power. But, he also can’t stay healthy and will be our full time DH with occasional first baseman.
These analyses above are rational. Irrationally, I rather have Damon and Matsui than Nick and Granderson because I trust them more to delivery at the clutch time. If I were Cashman, I would trade for Granderson and sign Damon back.
Of course, I don’t have problems with Nick instead of Matsui if Yankees spend over their budget they claim they have again and end up with getting Damon back in the end.
If Cashman ends up with a second-tier left fielder(not Damon) along with Nick and Gradnerson after trading Melky, I am afraid of this experiment may not end too well.
There are just too many players in the lineup we are not sure what we can get. Don’t forget A-Rod has a hip surgery that requires second surgery originally. Don’t forget Swisher actually perform better than most people expect. Let alone Posada stays healthy while Jeter plays well. On top of that, we actually have Melky and Gardner platoon for center fielder. I am not sure what we can get from Gardner when he plays everyday.
As for Javier Vazquez trade, it is a good deal if the only thing we ask him to do is pitching behind CC, AJ and Pettitte. If one of top 3 gets hurt that is high possibility after the workload they endure for 2009 season and we ask the other guys pitch at the spot they are not supposed to be along with a uncertain no.5 starter, I can see the disaster waiting to happen.
I just don’t feel too comfortable with the combination of three-year workload of CC, injury history of AJ, age of Pettitte and uncertainty of Joba and Hughes. That is why I don’t like the trade for Javier Vazquez.
I know Javier Vazquez has a nice track record of durability. But, it doesn’t guarantee it will happen again in 2010. Let alone what happened in 2004. If I were Brian Cashman, I will push for a front line starter who proves he can handle American league, such as Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, John Lackey, etc. Even if we can’t get one of them, I will use the same amount of money given to Javier Vazquez to sign both Chien-Ming Wang and Ben Sheets that will bring us two potential two frontline starters.
The other two things what Cashman has done this off-season I don’t like are bullpen and catchers. He basically hand the job to Cervelli. Don’t get me wrong. Cervelli has done a great job. But, can he handle the job as a full time backup to Posada? Let alone the possibility to be a starting catcher if Posada gets hurt again. I think Yankees underestimate the value of Molina.
Of course, I know Yankees have depth in catching department down the farm system. But, are they ready?
The other thing is no move at all made by Cashman for the bullpen. I know relief pitchers except closers perform differently every year. I know Girardi shows the ability to manage the bullpen well. However, I am not too sure Girardi has enough options after Cashman almost empties high level of Yankees minor league system this offseason.
Don’t forget Mo is 40 year old, especially when you consider the workload he endures during playoff run. On top of that, it seems to me Mo loses his stuff a little bit after the injury he suffered at previous year. Not to mention, he told to reporters after playoff he pitched with some sort of injuries.
Even if Mo is Mo and someone from somewhere can do the good job in the bullpen, Yankees certainly need a more certain setup man. I believe that guy will be Joba who Yankees finally stretch him out enough as a starter. Keep in mind two things. There are more frontline starters available while Pettitte is more likely retired next year.
That is why I would sign or trade someone to be Mo’s setup man if I were Cashman this off-season. Just in case, Mo may get hurt or pitch not so well. If the guy perform well, he may be the potential heir to Mo next season or use as leverage to get Mo back at reasonable price. By getting a new setup man, we can put both Joba and Hughes into the rotation where they are supposed to be. Because there are some uncertainty surrounding with Joba and Hughes as starters, The signings of Ben Sheets and Chien-Ming Wang as safety net will work out perfectly.
Among CC, AJ, Pettitte, Joba, Hughes and Sheets, someone will get injured or pitch not so well. Of course, the other 5 guys can form a great rotation. Because the depth we have in the rotation, we can ease Wang back to his old form right around All-Star break for potential injury. Even if Sheets and Wang don’t work out well for Yankees, they are one-year deal and we can see what we can get from Joba and Hughes.
That being saying, I bet one of Sheets and Wang will perform well in 2010. By the way, we can save some depth in the minor league system by not making a trade for Javier Vazquez.
Hopefully, I am wrong and Yankees have the same luck as 2009 season in terms of injury.
Let’s Go Yankees!

A.J. vs Tiger
8:54pm I just wake up and need to leave home soon for my sister's work pretty soon. I will try to watch this game as much as I can. When I turn on my television, I just saw A.J. struggling with his command at the top of 5th and 6th inning. However, the good thing is A.J. still somehow to keep Yankees in this game.
9:03pm Melky makes another great play in the center field second inning in a row. In the 5th inning, he gunned down Tiger Cabrera at the 2nd inning. In the 6th inning, he makes a great catch to complete double play.
9:06pm Great to see another Taiwanese player in the major league. I have mixed feeling because I want Yankees to win, but I don't want Yankees to hit Ni well.
9:15pm Man, If Posada is not the base runner at the 2nd base, we score that tie run.
9:43pm What a big hit from Teixeira. One more big hit from Swisher will win this game for Yankees.
9:48pm Now, it's up to Melky to give our bullpen more breathing room to work with.
9:49pm I will let Hughes pitch 8th inning. Let see what Girardi will do.
9:53pm I guess Girardi agree with me.
10:00pm Hughes, one more out, please. We will see Mo.
10:05pm What a performance by Hughes. YAH!
10:09pm Man, I hate this rain delay. Hopefully, Mo haven't warm iup. I probably won't be able to watch the ending.

Joba vs TB(20th come from behind victory of 2009 season)
I can't keep watching this game. I need to go to bed. If Yankees can somehow end up with winning this game, Yankees have to thank two great defense plays. One is by Teixeira. The other is by Melky. Those two great defense plays at least save two runs for Yankees.
Let's Go Yankees!
OK! I am lying. I say I need to go to bed, but I can't. I don't want to turn the game off when Yankees is down. This team is different. You never can count them out. Guess what? I get another Yankees' rally. Mo is one out away from saving the game for Yankees. Guess what? The last batter he faces is Longoria.
Do you concern about Mo after yesterday game? If you do, shame on you. I don't. I guess Mo tells Girardi doesn't tell the greatest closer of the all time to walk anyone intentionally. The more I watch Girardi managing the game, the more I question whether Girardi can be a good manager for Yankees or not. and you?

CC vs Angels
Hello, everyone. Sorry for lack of posts lately. I am expecting a busy May. I get a lot of works need to be done in May. So, I probably won't be able to post a lot in May. Once I get pass May safely, I will be back to post more. Thanks for patience from everyone.
1:16pm CC has an impressive first inning with two strikeouts. The most important thing is he throws different pitches for strike. It is certainly a good sign for Yankees. However, I am not sure how many runs Yankees offense is able to put on when you look at the bottom of Yankees lineup.
1:20pm Man, Jeter was hit by a pitch from Angel's starting pitcher. We can't have another injury from our starting lineup.
1:24pm It looks like Jeter hurts his neck when he steals second base. Hopefully, he is alright. By the way, Aybar was taken out the game at the same play Jeter hurts his neck. Angels certainly can't hit more bad luck this season.
1:40pm CC is in the jam now with bases loaded. This is the big moment of the game. If CC is able to get out of this inning without giving up any run, it will frustrate Angels team. CC gets a big strikeout and a line out to end the inning.
1:51pm As many of us expect, the bottom of lineup do nothing in the bottom of second inning.
1:57pm I was about screaming at "Don't walk the leadoff hitter of the inning" and then CC got him out with a infield pop out.
2:00pm Is it just me to feel this way? I feel 2009 Yankees team is so different than the Yankees team the past few year.
2:02pm Melky makes a great diving catch at right field after Gardner makes a diving catch at center field. Great plays for both Yankees young outfielders.
2:11pm The way Yankees offense looks the first three innings of the this game. CC better has a great day. However, I will definitely feel nervous when Yankees bullpen has to hold a one-run lead.
2:14pm Pena just makes a great play at 3B. Yankees has made three great defense plays behind CC. It's so nice to see that from Yankees team. Oh, by the way, CC hits one of Angels to send a message, "Don't keep hitting my teammates."
2:33pm CC has pitches 5 scoreless innings. However, he uses a lot of pitches to do so. At this rate, We will be lucky if we can get 7 innings out of CC. And then.......?
2:38pm Yankees always turn no-name pitchers or everyone-hit-hard pitchers into Cy Young award winners for some reasons.
2:44pm Pena just makes another nice play and Yankees almost get a double play. Now, Jeter makes an error.
2:50pm Now, double steal from Angels. Angels tie the score. This one hurts because Jeter makes an error.
2:59pm Jeter certainly redeems himself for that leadoff double. Hopefully, Yankees is able to play abc ball to get that run in.
3:00pm Damon does his part to get Jeter to third base with less than 2 outs. Teixeira doesn't do his job.
3:13pm CC picks up another huge strikeout.
3:39pm CC ends up with giving up 5 runs. The way Yankees bullpen goes, it certainly can't fault Girardi to let CC pitch 7th inning. When CC hasn't pitched like an ACE so far this season, he hasn't pitched badly.
3:46pm I understand Veras has a great arm. However, the way he pitches I don't understand why he is still on Yankees team. The reason I says this is not from his terrible pitching performance. Veras never has good command of strike zone. I hate a pitcher can't throw strike. Let alone a relief pitcher who pitches late in the game can't throw strike. I know Veras doesn't have options left, but I don't think losing him is a big lost for Yankees.
4:10pm Well, Robertson certainly doesn't do himself any favor. I don't care about two runs, but I care about two walks he gives up.
4:18pm Posada hits a two-runs homerun to keep Yankees alive.
4:30pm Gardner walks and then scores on Angels' error. The three runs Yankees bullpen give up look big right now.
4:33pm I finally have a little free time to watch a baseball game and then witness Yankees end their 4-games winning streak. However, I am pride of what Yankees keep fighting.

Aceves starts with CC in minor league
1:21pm I just turn on computer and watch Rays announcers praising Price's strikeout to end the first inning. Come on. I know this feed is from Rays announcers for their home team. Even though Price strikes out Nady, it's a high changeup which is a bad pitch.
1:24pm Hopefully, Aceves is fine. It seems to me Aceves turns his ankle or something. I actually think Aceves pitches well in that first inning even though he loads the bases.
1:37pm Swisher just gets on base by a walk after taking some balls and fouling many pitches. The way Swisher hit and play should bring best out of Nady. Nice competition. The same thing goes to Melky and Gardner.
1:54pm Even though I like the way Aceves pitches, he should try to throw more strikes. It seems to me he always pitches behind in the count. He will be in big trouble if he does that in regular season and faces a more patient team like Red Sox and Yankees.
2:01pm After reading the ball well and catching that fly ball, Gardner just gets on base with a walk. At this stage of spring training, the way Gardner plays is very hard to see Melky winning the job over him barring injury.
2:15pm It's a stupid play by Crawford. Crawford just gets tagged out at third for trying to steal third, especially he just steals second base. When you hit before Pena, what is the difference between second and third. You know what? Pena follows up a single. I know he is confident on his speed, but why do that when you just steal second and a left hand hitter(Pena) is on the plate. Even though Rays eventually score one run, Crawford basically causes his team one run.
2:25pm The way Rays hitters run crazily off Cash today. We better not to let Posada catch first series against Rays. It will be better to let Molina catch this series to stop running game. First run of this game is basically from steal. That not only prevents Rays from running but also avoids Posada hurting himself for trying to catch runners at this early of season.
2:37pm I am watching this game on MLB.TV. I know the feed is Rays network, but it has been very hard for me to stand this broadcasting. The way they praise their home team and down on other teams as much as they can is unbearable.
2:55pm I know Swisher didn't throw very well to second base when he tries to start a double play. However, the throw is not horrible. I actually think we get the runner. Swisher just make a terrific play at first when the ball will be down the line for a double.
2:58pm All the throws Cash make to second base are all very terrible. He should not have anything to do with Yankees major league club.
3:12pm Marte has a relatively easy solid first inning of spring training.
3:16pm Igawa's scoreless inning streak is on verge of being broken. Amazing! Igawa just strike out when there are runners on second and third with less than 2 outs. The locations of Igawa's pitches are better.
3:22pm Even though Igawa gives up a walk after a tough at bat by Rays hitter, Igawa loads the bases and gets out of it. Cashman definitely is working on trading Igawa if he can do it now.
3:24pm Rays announcers really use every chance to praise Rays as much as possible.
3:44pm Igawa loads the base again. m.... Igawa just walks the first run he allows in spring training. Ok. I take it back. The way Igawa pitches should have nothing to do with Yankees big league club. His command and control really doesn't look like the most Japanese pitchers I often see. His command and control is better, but it still is not good enough for American league.

Joba's 5th Spring Training Outing
1:21pm It sounds like Joba has a good first inning of work. Suzyn and John say Yankees hope Joba can get batters out at fewer pitches. I actually don't concern about that. As a no.5 pitcher, if big 4 are doing they are supposed to do, we should have well-rested bullpen to back up Joba. That is the lesson Joba will learn from pitching more. I don't think that is something young pitchers can suddenly listen to.
1:33pm Damon not only makes a great catch on left field but also move Melky over to third base with less than 2 outs. Let see whether or not Teixeira can get that run in with less than 2 outs. Ok. Texieira walks. I think Matsui can get that run in
1:37pm Probably not. Let see how Nady hit in that spot. Ok. They don't. They have been done this very well so far this spring. I hate to see Yankees can't get the runner on third with less than 2 outs in.
1:40pm Joba is in trouble now after giving out three singles in a row.
1:47pm See Tiger get that runner who is on third with less than 2 outs in.
1:51pm Joba gets out inning and only allows one run even though he uses tons of pitches for that. In the end, How many runs pitchers give up is all the matter.
1:57pm Is it just me to feel this way? Is this Tiger top pitching prospect? The way Yankees keep hitting liners right at fielders. It doesn't sound very impressive for me.
2:08pm I will guess Joba uses spring training to practice his third pitch(curveball) and fourth pitch(changeup). I won't worry about Joba's stats, results and pitching counts.
2:12pm See, another great hit by Yankees. I know he gets tons of money of signing bonus and he is very young.
2:15pm Joba uses 57 pitches for three innings. Wow! A lot of pitches.
2:16pm Damon hita another ball hard to drive in first run for Yankees. I just finish the previous sentence. Teixeira comes up with another double for another run. Yankees leads 2-1 over Tiger. I think Tiger will definitely rush him if they put this 19 year old young pitching prospect on the big league team out of spring training.
2:22pm The way Swisher demonstrates his ability at plate and the way he plays defense when you compare him with Nady. I don't think why Swisher can't beat out Nady for right fielder job. I really don't think Girardi should grant right fielder job to Nady by default.
2:28pm Joba's day is done. 3.1 IP 4H 5K 1R/ER 63 Pitches.
2:33pm Damon makes another great play and saves a run. I sometimes don't understand so many so called experts claim how terrible defense Yankees has on every position. I think Damon is above average left fielder. If Damon can play a capable left fielder, I can't see why Jeter can't do it when he and Yankees decide to move from short stop position.
2:36pm I know a lot of Yankees fans don't like the way Suzyn and John broadcast on radio. However, they are fine for me when you compare with other radio announcers. I know they like to express their opinion a lot, but at least we can understand what exactly happen on the field. They also give us many information on both teams on the field.
2:48pm Miscommunication between Cano and Nady?
3:00pm Yankees certainly can be benefited from competition of all out fielders positions once Matsui can start playing outfield position. At least center fielder and right fielder will be in competition.
3:02pm Forget to mention. Melky improve the ability of running and putting bunts done. I agree with Sterling that Yankees play fundamental baseball better. However, Teixeira strikes out with runner on third with less than 2 outs after Nady did once earlier. Maybe today is one of days Yankees hitters just can't do it or opponents pitchers pitch better when runners on scoring position.
3:07pm Mo is up. Yes. Mo certainly will throw more pitches that last time out. Five pitches for strike out. Next pitch for ground out. Three pitches for a ground ball single. Three pitches for third out of the inning. Mo's line 12 pitches 10 strikes 2 balls 2SO 1GO 1H.
3:14pm Everyone is worry about who will be closer once Mo retires. Why worry about something is so far away? The way Mo pitches and the command and control Mo demonstrates I don't see why Mo can't pitch few more years.
3:34pm Edwar is in trouble and give up the tie run. Spring training stats sometimes mean nothing for major league pitchers. Not to mention, Edwar is behind everyone because of injury. I know many Yankees fans concern how Edwar, Bruney and Veras will perform and hope other youngsters to win the job. I know the trio don't have good command and control, but we know we have a lot of replacements down the farm if they can't get the job done once season starts.
3:51pm Miranda certainly can hit, but his defense is not good at all. By the way, Veras comes in and gives up another run after Miranda hits a two runs homerun.

CC's 3rd Spring Training Outing(All eyes on Posada/Mo)
7:19pm I am exciting to watch CC pitching for the first time on YES I believe. It looks like CC has a good start. CC strikes out two of three batters he face. Bad news is Posada doesn't have chances to test his arm again.
7:25pm Any thought to put Posada on leadoff spot? Ha! Well, if he can run faster, it will be a vital option. Just kidding.
7:28pm Teixeira just strike out when runners on first and second. If this happen in regular season, he is in trouble.
7:31pm I am one of supports for Matsui. I believe he will contribute a lot and will be extremely important for us, especially after A-Rod's injury.
7:37pm The way Yankees pitching staff builds up, there must be a nice friendly competition within pitching staff.
7:39pm Melky also was out for one pitch in the first inning. Melky really needs to show more patience.
7:41pm Because of the balk, we lose a chance for Posada to throw out runner. By the way, USA is behind. Jeter is on his way to be back with us.
7:43pm Posada makes the first throw to third base. Even though the throw is not good, hopefully he comes out healthy.
7:54pm Are you watching WBC and come back to watch Yankees game during break? or another way around?
7:56pm USA leads 2-1 while Yankees also leads 2-1.
7:59pm Two more strikeouts for CC. If our pitching staff stay healthy, we will have a unbelievable season. I can't wait the season to start.
8:06pm It looks like we get a good no.3 and no.4 hitters in our lineup, right? Teixeira hits a double down the line and then Matsui hits one out. Well, Nady hits another double. Yankees experienced hitters are very tough on young pitchers because they can not do the same thing for second time around and they will hammer any mistake.
8:13pm Even though Melky hits a double, but I don't like he basically hits every pitch is thrown to him.
8:18pm I actually like we are able to watch more prospects and bench guys playing because of the absence of Jeter, Cano and A-Rod.
8:23pm Even though the score of spring training doesn't count, hopefully Yankees can good at bat on situational hitting. Yankees have done that well so far. Well, great to see. Posada drives in two more runs.
8:27pm You know why Yankees have hit well so far this spring? Because we don't have a all star in every position, a lot of players just want to get on base for big hitters hitting behind them.
8:30pm I agree with what Peter said on his blog. I don't think Yankees will bring back CC after long half inning.
8:33pm Teixeira has another good at bat. I need to ask this again. Do we have mercy rule in spring training? Bases loaded again in the same inning.
8:40pm I am surprised at seeing CC back to 4th inning. CC goes through 4th inning with some command issue that is expected after long half inning.
8:50pm As you guys know, Internet is not cheap in Australia, especially after 12pm before 12am. Hopefully, I am able to watch Mo pitching.
8:54pm Even though I can't wait to watch Mo pitching, I don't need Melky to hit first pitch he sees to help me out for that. By the way, the pitch Melky hits is a ball. Melky really needs to be selective on the plate.
8:56pm Mo is coming. Yes.
8:59pm Wow! Three pitches for first strike out. Unbelievable! Will it be nicer to let Mo throw more pitches? Well, that's impossible when you consider the control and command Mo has. Mo retires the side with two strikeouts for 11 pitches(8 strikes). How can we live without Mo.
9:18pm A nice second inning work of spring training for Edwar.
9:30pm USA is behind 3-4 in the 6th inning. Jeter is on his way to be with us soon.
9:46pm Even though I want Jeter to be back with us, I am happy to see Jeter having a good at bat when runner on scoring position. Jeter gets on base.
9:58pm If USA would lose this game, it's certainly nicer for Yankees fans to see Youkilis can't come up with big hit and Jeter works out a walk.
7:25pm Any thought to put Posada on leadoff spot? Ha! Well, if he can run faster, it will be a vital option. Just kidding.
7:28pm Teixeira just strike out when runners on first and second. If this happen in regular season, he is in trouble.

My first game of 2009
YES. This second spring training officially opens 2009 season for me. If "most" people stay healthy, we are going to have a fantastic 2009 season. I will try to liveblog this game as much as I can.
1:10pm Watching a introduction clip of free agents signing get me to feel exciting for 2009 season.
1:22pm Does Hughes hit batters because he throws cutters?
1:27pm Not a bad first inning for Hughes, right?
1:33pm I am a little bit disappointed at Teixeira's first at bat. Ha! I think I expect too much. This is just a spring training game. However, his defense is certainly great.
1:39pm Hughes has better command at second inning. I think we should stop looking at radar gun reading at this stage of spring training.
1:46pm Is it possible for Yankees broadcasting crew not to talking about steroids? I am just tired of hearing the same thing again and again.
1:48pm The first two innings of this game let us know what AL East will look like. Pitching & Defense.
1:50pm Hughes is done after 2 innings. In my opinion, as first outing of spring training, it's good performance for him. Coke is up now.
1:53pm Cano makes a great great play.
1:58pm Welcome back, Posada. Posada will play a huge role in 2009 season. By the way, what a contract between Posada and Molina in term of offense.
2:37pm I miss a little bit because of my computer, but come back on time for Posada's another RBI. By the way, Melky doesn't look so great at his first game of spring training. Burney looks good, especially his velocity at this stage of spring training.
2:40pm That's why Jeter is the captain who everyone wants him on his team. A great relay.
3:10pm Shelley Duncan certainly loves to hit Rays. I really think Shelley should be able to contribute to other major league team as a power righthand batter off bench. If he can somehow figure out breaking balls, he will become quite a player.
3:15pm Gardner makes a great catch and almost double up runner at second base. Gardner certainly has an edge over Melky right now.
3:16pm Melancon is up now. Most his pitches are at lower part of strike zone. He also changes speed quite well.

A rebound year from Hughes, Kennedy, Melky and Cano?
Accroding to RAB regard of Greg Maddux's retirement at winter meeting, the information to young pitcher:“the best way to learn is to screw up and not do it again.”
Immediately, I think about Hughes, Kennedy, Melky and Cano. I hope Yankees don't trade them and believe they may have a bound back year in 2009. Before 2008, they haven't actually failed in their professional baseball. I believe they all learn a lot from 2008 season and will do well in 2009.

Just don't get beat by yourself....
Recently, I not only have to keep working on my stuff but also keep my eyes on Yankees and Olympic games. I certainly watch my Taiwan baseball team play in Olympic games.
Do you know the difference of the way they play between Yankees and Taiwan? My Taiwan baseball team don't get beat by ourselves. I believe most Yankees fan have same feeling as me. When we watch Yankees playing, we feel stressful, uneasy and frustrated every time out even when the games Yankees win. Why? Our bombers beat themselves too often.
If my Taiwan baseball team get beat, we won't get beat by ourselves. My Taiwan baseball team is not a super strong team. We are not even a favor in this competition. We are going to lose some games I am pretty sure about that, but the reason will be the other team play better than us, not because we get beat by ourselves.
No matter my Taiwan baseball team win or lose, I always feel stress free and end up with feeling Let's go get them next time or they just play better than us. I won't feel frustrated and stressful after game. I won't have "what if" in my mind.
Take game 1 against Netherlands as example, Our pitchers won't give up too many free passes. We play great defense. Our position players not only play a flawless defense but also make few beautiful plays.
We don't have a lot of players can't hit for power, but we are very selective at the plate, move runners over and get them in very well. In fact, 2 of 5 runs came with sacrifice fly. When there is a runner on base, we will do whatever we can to move runner even when we can't get a hit.
On top of that, when the other team give us a chance to beat them. We won't miss it. For example, the only big inning we have is in the fourth inning when we score 3 of 5 runs. Netherlands pitcher give up 2 walks in that inning. We score 3 runs on two singles and one sacrifice fly.
This is something I think I miss most when I watch Yankees playing. Damon threw to second instead of third on a sacrifice fly. Cano and Betemit miscommunicate on stolen base. Cano made that costly error before Young's three-run homerun. Melky and Cano miscommunicate on a short fly ball. Sexson fails at least to move runners when there is first and second no one out. These plays all let our Yankees fans wonder "what if" after game. This is fundamental baseball. These plays help you to win ball game.

The most impressive thing tonight for me is......
Today is absolutely happy day for Yankees fans who basically can choose whatever reason among others make you feel happy the most, but the most impressive thing for me is the way Yankees play defense at the 2nd inning.
What a inning is! First of all, Melky made a great play in the center fielder and then Cano with Jeter turned a beautiful double play after that. I was screaming at my computer and couldn't believe what I just saw. Amazing! When you consider the game ends at 1:0, I only have one word to say our Yankees team "WoW!" No matter how many Yankee fans complain about the offense production from Melky, Cano, and Jeter, don't count on me. These are three positions we need to have strong defense in order to become a championship team. Of course, you have to add on Molina on this department as well.
Joba and Mo are pretty amazing tonight. I can't help to think what will look like in Yankeeland when we have Joba, Wang, Pettitte, Moose and Hughes at the rotation at the same time.

looking good
I think it's fair to say our bombers turn things around. Is it too greedy to wish a sweep and have a 5-1 road trip? I am tired of watching Yankees to stay around .500. I know we already took a series from Astros, but it will be nice to be 4 games over .5oo, right?
I am so happy to see Mussina winning his 260th career victory. Congrats, Moose. Of course, it doesn't hurt that our offense actually shows up in this game. Hopefully, our offense keep producing like that against Oswalt. Girardi looks like a genius when he decides to bat Melky in the 6th hole and pinches hit Cano, right? I think it's fair to say Girardi know what he is doing.

What a last opening game!
I must start with this off-line stuff because I was smiling when I saw Mo's styling outfit on the post-game interview. Of course, this comes with Mo's signature big smile. Can't image watching Yankees games one day with this guy.
I actually think Halladay pitch better than Wang, but baseball is a team game which it takes every guy on the roster to win. That's why Yankees win this game when Yankees got amazing defense from Melky, Jeter, A-Rod and Giambi, good pitching from Wang, Joba and Mo and enough offense against tough pitcher Halladay.
Even though Wang doesn't look very sharp which would be expected for first start of season, It's still pretty good for me to pitch 7 IP 2ER on only 92 pitches against Halladay's Blue Jays at Opening Day. I am so sick of nonstop doubts toward Wang with variety of reasons. Just give some credits to who deserve it no matter he is an "ACE" or not. The guy know how to win and always give us innings.
Back to the game, How about Wang's 8 ERA for Spring training? Nothing. Wang was pleased at mixing pitches well and pitching inside more after game, including fews sliders, change-ups, splitters that got him few outs. Of course, he credited this win to teammates' great defense behind him.
Joe Girardi is certainly different than Joe Torre when he replaced Candy bar with Loud Music in order to keep bombers happy and healthy. Need more evidences? Girardi went to mound to check with Wang when game was at 2-2 with 2-outs one man on third.
What did he say to Wang? According to Wang, Girardi asked him: "Can you get this last one?" ; Wang answered: " Yes" and Girardi simply tapped Wang and said:"This is your game! Go get them" before leaving the mound. Great manager's job.

That's why I love Melky so much...
Did you guys see that catch from Melky? Melky called off Cano and ran to catch that soft fly ball to center field. Did you guys also see Melky throwing out a Twins when he was trying get to third? I know, Melky has some problems on offense part, but Man, please put him on the center field.
As a today spring training game, two relievers, Heath Phillips and Ross Ohlendorf are impressive for me today. There are also two relievers who throw strikes named Jonathan Albaladejo and Chris Britton.
I don't really care too much how starters perform during spring training. They will be just fine, they just need to focus on the pitch they need to work on. For example, Joba(Changeup/Curve); Hughes(Changeup); Wang(Changeup/Splitter), etc. I pay more attention on bullpen and bench that have competition for spots because all 6 starters will all pitch at some point during season. They will protect Big Three and Mussina, Pettitte and Wang may need a break once a while.
By the way, Where is Jose Veras? I feel I haven't seen him pitched lately.
If I have to put my money on 25-men roster now, here they are as follows,
For sure barring injury(23):
Starters(5):Wang, Pettitte, Mussina, Hughes, Kennedy
Bullpen(6):Mo(closer), Joba(Setup), Kyle, LaTroy, Jeff Karstens(long reliever), Ross Ohlendorf
Starting lineup(9):Damon, Jeter, Abreu, A-Rod, Giambi, Posada, Cano, Matsui, Melky
Bench(3):Shelley, Molina, Betemit
Two more spots(2):
I think one spot goes to reliever; other spot goes to bench
They probably prefer lefty for that last spot if one of lefty can prove himself worth for that spot. Right now, the leading runner is Heath Phillips or Billy Traber. The dark horse is probably Chase Wright or Sean Henn(very far). If no lefty is worthy, Jose Veras or Jonathan Albaladejo probably will get that last spot(They also may fight with Ross Ohlendorf for that spot as well). This is the tough call now, but I bet on Billy Traber to break camp when Heath Phillips wait on AAA.
The last bench spot probably goes to super infielder unility player because Yankees already have enough depth on outfielders. Brett Gardner and Jason Lane really have to have monster spring training to win that last spot over. They really need someone to play all infield positions, especially for SS and 2B, so Nick Green or Chris Woodward probably will get that last spot. If I have to bet on that now, I will go to Chris Woodward.

If I have to put my money on 25-men roster now, here they are as follows,
For sure barring injury(23):
Starters(5):Wang, Pettitte, Mussina, Hughes, Kennedy
Bullpen(6):Mo(closer), Joba(Setup), Kyle, LaTroy, Jeff Karstens(long reliever), Ross Ohlendorf
Starting lineup(9):Damon, Jeter, Abreu, A-Rod, Giambi, Posada, Cano, Matsui, Melky
Bench(3):Shelley, Molina, Betemit
Two more spots(2):

Santana is great, but....
Do I the only one feel this way? I know I shouldn't read into too much, but there are four quotes from four different players. You can decide what you feel by yourself after reading them.
Mets' second baseman Castillo said that when he was traded to the Mets on July 30, Santana told him he wanted to come there as well, and Castillo relayed that to Mets general manager Omar Minaya(From Journal News)
"I was a little worried about getting traded because I wanted to stay with my teammates," Cabrera said through an interpreter last night at the Marriott Marquis(From Journal News)
"That's kind of been my goal the whole time, and to finally know that it's somewhat intact, it's a good feeling," the 21-year-old right-hander said Thursday at the Yankees' minor league complex.(From AP)
"I want to stay with them forever,"Wang said.(From AP)
Me? Santana is great, but I rather have Hughes, Melky and Wang.
Updated: Obviously, the readers of my blog don't want to deal these three players to Santana because of different reasons. I am with you guys about this poll. Here is the result.
35% No, Because of Wang
35% No, Because I want to keep all kids
28% No, Because of new philosophy

Kennedy, Melky, Wang for Santana?
Buster Olney on ESPN Radio just blew me away regard for one last call from Twins GM Bill Smith to Brian Cashman yesterday. Bill Smith asked Cashman:" How about Kennedy, Melky and Wang for Santana?" Man, Sorry for away from being a Yankee fan for a moment. As a Taiwanese, Thank God! Cashman said "No, Thanks". After a while, I am glad to hear Cashman said" No, Thanks" even though I am being a Yankee fan after wondering this ideal again. But, How about you?
P.S Just Rumors... I have no idea what kind of degree the truth of these rumors reach... I believe we will have tons of rumors flying around continuously on following days as well.

That's why you don't trade Melky
Did you guys hear the news about Hideki Matsui? According to news on Taiwanese media, Matsui didn't recover very well from his right knee surgery and may not get well in time for spring training.

Welcome back,Andy
I am so happy to be able to say this to Mo,Posada and then now Pettitte.I am glad to hear Andy Pettitte back. What a classy guy Andy is.No matter what kind of reasons change his mind,he did chose to come back when Yankees was in the most difficult situation. If Andy Pettitte were selfish person not treating team as priority,he would choose to come back when Yankees get Santana after giving up Hughes and Melky even Kennedy because he would be sure Yankee have excellent chance to get another ring. But,he didn't.He said he wanted to make sure Yankees knew they have him when they make up their plan for 2008 season. What a good guy!!!Why he chose to come back?Well,he got unstoppable calls from Jeter,Mo,Posada,Joe and mails or letters from fans.I am glad we did help you to make a decision,Andy.Welcome back,Andy.

I like combination of Hank and Cashman
Hank set up a deadline for Santana's trade.I like this idea.Don't play game with us,Twins. If you prefer Red Sox's offer, you can go ahead to take it and negotiate with them.If you don't like our offer, don't waste our time.Time is money.Just in case, you guys don't know that. Most yankees fans don't want to trade Hughes and Melky. We love their potential and personalities. They will be great in the future. In my opinion, our priority this off-season is bullpen, not rotation.I am fine with Wang,Mussina and three kids.I know this will be touch, but I can see bright future in 2009.
I agree with Pete's comment on his blog.As soon as Yankees walk away from this deal,Red Sox will walk away at the same time.I said this before on my blog.I doubt Red Sox is serious about getting Santana.Yankees is only team willing to give Twins prospects and Santana huge contract. The problem for Red Sox is upgrading their hitting, not pitching in my opinion.I will be shocked if Twins keep Santana and let him walk away after 2008 season.(Santana already informed Twins he won't waive his NTC once season starts)
These two quotes from Hank Steinbrenner about setting deadline for Santana's trade.
"I'm not going to be played against the Red Sox. That's not something I'll do. That's not something the Yankees should ever do, and that's I think what they're trying to do now," "So if they want the best offer that has been offered to them, then they need to make up their minds."

"We'll see how it goes, but this is not an act. It's not a bluff. It's just reality," he said. "Because as much as I want Santana, and you can make that clear -- for his sake, to know that I do want him -- but the fact is that I'm not going to play the game. We've made them the best offer. And at this point, it's not going to get any better. So they can decide. At this point, it's up to them. I don't think they want to lose us in this thing, obviously. Nobody wants to lose the Yankees in a negotiation."

Don't panic,Yankees fans...
Red Sox recent offer to Twins(Jon Lester,Coco Crisp,Jed Lowry and Justin Masterson) is not going to get it done.Red Sox have to put Clay Buchholz or/and Jacoby Ellsbury into any package to Twins in order to make me think Red Sox are serious at getting Santana.Otherwise, they are just trying to drive Yankees price up.Up to that point,If I were Cashman,I would not put Hughes into my offer.I still believe a package with Melky,Kennedy, other prospects from minors will get it done because I still think Yankees is the only team serious about getting Santana other than Mets(they don't have enough prospects for this). No matter what happen,I won't give up Joba and Cano and I won't give up both Hughes and Kennedy too.On top of that,I don't think Santana want to go to Boston's staff with Beckett,Curt,Dice-k.There are a lot of egos involving with these guys.
Most Yankees fans must think Red Sox will win it all,if Red Sox gets Santana from Twins to go along with Beckett,Curt and Dice-k by giving up these prospects.Don't panic,Yankees fans.Baseball game is team effort sport.Baseball game is playing on the field, not on the paper. No one know what is going to happen. Is Curt a lock to be health for whole season?Does Dice-K pitch better than 2007 for sure?Which version of Beckett will show up in 2008?2006 version or 2007 version? My favorite Taiwanese pro baseball team is a underdog team all the time.I know that feeling. The reality is you can't predict the future. It won't kill me to start the season with upgrade bullpen without Santana, but assuming Pettitte coming back.Remember,Yankees hold winning record with Red Sox by using the rotation they have now.Of course,We don't have Rocket this season but we have three kids for whole season.
